All the saber-rattling around Kevin Harvick and the possibility that he'd jump ship from Richard Childress Racing? Yeah, that's enough of that. RCR has announced that Harvick will remain with the team through 2010.
Team owner Richard Childress (right) actually used the word "rumors" in his statement announcing Harvick's 2010 plans, which is too bad because the Harvick story was one of the more persistent, and distracting, midseason storylines. Would he bail for a third Stewart-Haas car? Would he start his own team? As it turns out, nope.
"While the 2009 season has not been what any of us have wanted," Harvick said in a statement, "Richard and I are both committed to improving the performance ... for the remainder of this year and the 2010 season."
And good thing, too, because Harvick has, to put it politely, stunk on ice this year. He hasn't won a single race since 2007's Daytona 500, he's stuck at 24th in the standings, and he can't seem to get out of his own way on the track. He's one of the best pure drivers in the sport, but he simply can't catch a break.
What does this mean in the long term? Well, the 2010 free agent season just got that much more interesting. And hopefully RCR will have its testing issues behind it and get back to Chase-challenging in 2010.
