NASCAR, drivers remember eighth anniversary of 9/11

NASCAR and its fans have never forgotten 9/11; all you need to do is survey the bumper stickers in a given race parking lot and you'll see all the reminders you need. This year, Nationwide driver Benny Gordon is working with the September 11 Memorial committee to run a commemorative paint scheme on his No. 72 Ford.

The car was unveiled at Ground Zero on Aug. 31, where a number of World Trade Center first responders autographed the car. Gordon also received a flag that flew over Ground Zero; the flag will fly on the infield flagpole at Richmond International Raceway. You can see a slideshow of the car's visit above or visit Benny Gordon's website.

The New England 300 in New Hampshire had been scheduled to run the weekend after 9/11, but NASCAR wisely postponed the race. The only available date was the day after Thanksgiving, and the race became a de facto exhibition because Jeff Gordon had already clinched the title that year. Robby Gordon won the race for his first Cup-level win.

I don't want to turn this post into some kind of political Bushies-vs.-Truthers free-for-all, but if you want to share your own 9/11 thoughts and memories below, feel free.
