You ever play a game against your dad? He used to let you win, didn't he? You know, the whole "I'm not going to crush my child's hopes so early" mentality. Well, Matt Kenseth thinks that rule's for losers. Losers, you hear me?
This past weekend at Wisconsin's Madison International Speedway (aside: how exactly can a speedway be "international"? Does it extend into Canada?), Kenseth ran a pair of 50-lap late-model races against his 16-year-old son Ross. You can see their cars above, Ross in the #25 and Matt in the familiar #17.
Kenseth showed no mercy for the lad, bumping and then passing him for the win in the first race. (Ross finished second.) Kenseth then dominated again in the second race; Ross finished sixth.
Full Throttle noted that Kenseth wasn't even thinking of letting the youngster win to build his confidence: "I wouldn't let anybody beat me," he said. "If I wanted to let people beat me, I wouldn't be doing this for a living. I'm competitive, everybody that races cars is competitive, and would never let anybody else win, so that's just never gonna happen."
Yeah! Yeah! Now, you might think that's some harsh, Great Santini-style parenting, but me, I'm all for it. Kids these days are too coddled! No more "everybody wins" nonsense! Not only does everybody not win, sometimes it's your own daddy that's beating you! Matt Kenseth, we salute you. And we'll send our kids' therapy bills your way, too.
