Great story out of Pennsylvania Wednesday night as Kasey Kahne hosted the latest "Battle of the Grove" at Williams Grove Speedway in Mechanicsburg. The race is part of Kasey's annual foundation event, and saw Kasey and Kyle Busch taking on a bunch of local drivers in 360 sprint and late model racing. (That photo there is of Kasey from last year's event.)
So, big-time NASCAR drivers against local punks, no contest, right? Right, but not the way you think. While Kahne leaped out to first in the 30-lap 358/360 event, Brian Montieth caught him and won the race. His prize? Three grand. (For reference, Kasey earned $148,573 two days earlier for finishing fifth at Pocono. Racing: good job if you can get it.)
In the late model race, Kyle Busch took the lead even though he was driving on a track he'd never visited in a car he'd never raced. He held off local guy Jason Covert for 14 laps. But Covert took over the lead, and was heading for the win until Kyle spun him! Nah, just kidding, Kyle raced cool and finished behind Covert.
"It was great to come out and race with these guys," Busch told the local Daily Record. "I didn't have enough for him."
Can't say it enough -- it's insanely cool that these top NASCAR guys will get down in the mix with local-guy drivers. High praise to Kasey and Kyle both for stepping up.
