There are two ways to do driver introductions -- routine and calm, as at the White House Wednesday, or blow the doors off, as Daytona is doing there above. Me, I go with the latter option. A little extra flame to announce your arrival is useful in every situation, from prerace festivities to getting called up for your turn at the dentist.
Bristol Motor Speedway has released the list of tunes that this weekend's drivers will enter to, and it's quite the eclectic lot. A driver's choice of songs says a lot about him and about his season, so let's take a look at some of the hidden lyrical content in several drivers' songs:
Tony Stewart: Kid Rock, "Bawitdaba" -- "I said it's all good and it's all in fun / Now get in the pit and try to love someone." Hmm ... does his crew know about this?
Mark Martin: AC/DC, "For Those About To Rock" -- "We ain't no legend, ain't no cause / We're just livin' for today." Yeah, that'll work for Martin. He's certainly not living for the Chase, the way he ran last week.
Dale Earnhardt Jr.: AC/DC, "Thunderstruck" -- "I was caught / In the middle of a railroad track / I looked 'round, / And I knew there was no turning back / My mind raced /And I thought what could I do?" That sounds like exactly what goes through Dale Junior's head every time the call to pit comes.
Scott Speed: Black-Eyed Peas, "Boom Boom Pow" -- "I'm a beast when you turn me on / Into the future cybertron/ Harder, faster, better, stronger / Sexy ladies extra longer." Yep, everybody needs a dream to keep them going.
Kurt Busch: Cake, "Going The Distance" -- "As they speed thru the finish the flags go down / The fans get up, and get out of town / The arena is empty except for one man / Still driving and striving as fast as he can." Kurt. Race has been over for six hours. Kurt! KURT!
Carl Edwards: House of Pain, "Jump Around" -- Pack it up, pack it in / Let me begin / I came to win." I'm guessing "I came to collect enough points to make it into the Chase" just didn't fit the rhyme scheme.
