State of the Teams 2009: Richard Childress Racing

All week, we're surveying NASCAR's top teams and seeing how they've positioned themselves this season. Next up: the tough-luck RCR crew.

Drivers (rank): Clint Bowyer (15), Jeff Burton (17), Casey Mears (22), Kevin Harvick (25)

Wins in 19 races: 0 (Best finish: Bowyer, 3rd, Martinsville)

The story: It's been an ugly year for Richard Childress Racing, no two ways about it. A year after putting three drivers -- those handsome, happy lads above -- into the Chase, there's a very real likelihood that exactly zero Childress drivers will make the Chase this season. Nobody's quite sure what the problem is, but Jeff Burton is popping off and Kevin Harvick is saying absolutely nothing, both of which have people very nervous. Clint Bowyer just keeps sliding backward in the standings, while Casey Mears hasn't exactly lit the world on fire in his first RCR season. Bottom line, nothing seems to be going well at all -- and there's no sign anything's going to change anytime soon.

Verdict: There's internal turmoil at RCR, with rumors surrounding Harvick in particular. Is he bolting to Stewart-Haas? Is he heading to another race team? Is he just posturing to get himself a better contract after his runs out next year? Whichever, it's a good bet that the current roster of RCR won't last through the next couple of years.
