Michael Waltrip Racing has scheduled a press conference for 12:30 Eastern today -- right ahead of the Michael Jackson memorial, so they'd better get it over quickly -- to discuss what is widely believed to be the announcement that Martin Truex Jr. will move to the MWR stable next season.
I don't want to get too far ahead of things here, because it's entirely possible -- though not particularly likely -- that this is to announce that Mikey will be on the next "Dancing with the Stars," or whatever. But let's put it this way -- these two parties have been dancing with one another for several months now, and MWR seems like the most realistic and appropriate place for Truex to end up.
The other element of this equation is that Waltrip will likely scale back to a part-time seat for the highest-profile races. Say what you will about Mikey's tendency to get up close and personal with the wall, he's still a Daytona winner and he's got a fine pedigree. Seeing him shuffle off to the broadcast gig that surely awaits him will mark the end in a storied chapter in NASCAR history. A chapter we wanted to see from behind several retaining walls, sure, but a chapter nonetheless.
Post your thoughts on the rumored switch (and the news, when it breaks) right here.
